As many Americans prepare to take to the skies next week for the Thanksgiving holiday, there will no doubt be those who wish to travel with their holiday-themed foods. But will airport security let your turducken aboard the plane with you?
Good news for you fans of fowl: the Transportation Security Administration says that yes, your turkey, duck, chicken, turducken, or turduckicken can travel with you as a carry-on. However, you can’t just stick it in your laptop bag, in case you were tempted to do so.
“Turduckens can be packed in dry ice for carry-on and checked bags. If you pack your turducken in regular ice, remember that the ice must be completely frozen when going through the checkpoint in order to adhere to the 3-1-1 rules for liquids, gels and aerosols,” the agency says. “And last but not least, odds are a turducken in a cooler (or shipping box) might exceed your airline’s carry-on size allowance, so make sure you check with them before you go to the airport.”

In case you’re traveling with gravy in the event that that bird proves dry, you’ll have to check that item, as it’s considered a liquid. Could you fill a bunch of 3.4-oz containers and put them in a sealed, quart-sized zip-top bag? Sure, but checking it would probably work better.
When it comes to other items, cakes, pies, bread, donuts, fruits, and vegetables are all allowed, TSA says in its Thanksgiving Travel Tips post.
And if you’ve got a horn of plenty, that cornucopia is good to go as long as it’s not filled with any prohibited items, including certain foods as well as weapons, of course.
